Nokia Siemens Networks Relies on eXtremeDB High Availability for Fault Tolerance in Metro Ethernet Switching Platform

Nokia Siemens Networks, a leading global provider of communications equipment, has integrated McObject’s eXtremeDB High Availability (HA) embedded database within its SURPASS hiD Carrier Ethernet switches platform. Within this networking device, eXtremeDB-HA provides real-time, fault-tolerant data management for the application responsible for chassis management.

Nokia Siemens Networks designed the SURPASS hiD platform to meet the requirements of Metro Ethernet aggregation and core carrier grade networks. Among other benefits, the switches allow for cost-effective and rapid network rollout, and convergence of triple play and business customer services over the same network infrastructure.

Major goals of SURPASS hiD switches include meeting the growing demand for bandwidth in carrier networks, and allowing carriers to leverage Ethernet technology’s ability to reduce costs (in terms of CAPEX and OPEX) without compromising availability or quality of service (QoS).

In adopting eXtremeDB High Availability, Nokia Siemens Networks joined a growing list of commununications equipment innovators relying on McObject’s fault-tolerant embedded database in their real-time devices.

As an in-memory database system (IMDS), eXtremeDB eliminates the disk and file I/O, caching management, data transfer and other overhead that slow the performance of traditional (disk-based) database management systems (DBMSs). As a result, eXtremeDB is an order of magnitude faster, delivering transaction execution times measured in microseconds. The streamlined database design also minimizes CPU demands, resulting in lower manufacturing costs for communications devices.

Networking equipment is well-known for its “five nines” (99.999% uptime) availability requirements. eXtremeDB-HA meets this demand via deployment of multiple fully synchronized eXtremeDB databases within the same hardware device or across multiple, widely distributed systems. With synchronous (2-safe) and asynchronous (1-safe) replication, and a host of other options, developers have the flexibility to configure eXtremeDB-HA to exactly match requirements.
