In 2021, McObject released eXtremeDB/rt is the first and only deterministic embedded database management system to work with an RTOS to guarantee transaction deadlines in mission- and safety-critical hard real-time applications.

McObject’s eXtremeDB High Availability Solution Builds on Fault Tolerance, Messaging Strengths of QNX Neutrino RTOS

November 24, 2003 — McObject® has released eXtremeDB™ High Availability (HA) and the eXtremeDB HA Application Framework for the QNX® Neutrino® realtime operating system (RTOS). This fault-tolerant version of McObject’s in-memory database system leverages QNX Neutrino’s network-distributed message passing to deliver the highest degree of reliability, along with eXtremeDB’s unsurpassed performance and ultra-small footprint.

Process control applications, telecom and networking gear, and other systems with demanding “five nines” (99.999% uptime) reliability requirements comprise a fast-growing segment of embedded software developed on QNX Software Systems’ RTOS. These often mission- and life-critical applications are managing greater volumes of more complex data—creating a need for fast, lightweight databases that can meet their reliability demands.

McObject’s eXtremeDB HA introduces an innovative, platform-independent High Availability Application Framework architecture based on a rugged, time-cognizant, two-phase commit protocol. Taking advantage of QNX Neutrino’s seamless and reliable message passing, McObject’s protocol ensures that changes to the master database and identical standby databases succeed or fail together. Deployed atop QNX message passing, the HA Application Framework enables deployment of multiple fully synchronized eXtremeDB databases within the same hardware device or across multiple, widely distributed systems.

eXtremeDB’s two-phase commit protocol facilitates instantaneous fail-over, with zero replication-induced latency. This instant database recovery perfectly complements the ability of QNX Neutrino RTOS-based systems to recover intelligently from software faults, even in drivers and other critical programs — without rebooting.

“In many embedded systems, providing for high availability is as critical as minimizing footprint and maximizing responsiveness. eXtremeDB already offers a footprint of about 100K and exceptional in-memory performance. With eXtremeDB HA for the QNX Neutrino RTOS, McObject builds on QNX Software Systems’ powerful messaging to deliver the highest degree of fault tolerance in data management for embedded devices,” McObject President and Co-Founder Steve Graves said.

“We welcome McObject’s new high availability solution, particularly since many of our customers choose the QNX Neutrino RTOS for its ability to enable uptimes of 99.999% or higher,” said Linda Campbell, director of strategic alliances at QNX. “Moreover, products like eXtremeDB High Availability complement our own high availability framework, which offers fine-grained fault isolation and automated error recovery for the most demanding applications in networking, industrial control, healthcare, and in-vehicle telematics.”

The eXtremeDB HA release for the QNX Neutrino RTOS is available immediately for evaluation. Contact a McObject sales representative through sales@mcobject.com to request your copy.
