Motorola’s MOSCAD SCADA Application Benefits From eXtremeDB Embedded Database
Motorola, Inc. has deployed McObject’s eXtremeDB in-memory database within MOSCAD Network Fault Management (NFM), Motorola’s SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) application that is used widely in radio networks to optimize performance, fix problems and prevent downtime.
Within MOSCAD NFM, Motorola has integrated eXtremeDB in the embedded software of remote terminal units (RTUs) responsible for monitoring and controlling radio devices and associated equipment such as generators and air conditioning. eXtremeDB enables standard access to all volatile network management values (such as equipment and network status), often responding in real-time for events and alarms.
Motorola chose eXtremeDB after tests demonstrated the database’s superiority to competing products in performance, memory footprint, and cost efficiency. For this application, eXtremeDB’s small code size and low system load free resources to support key tasks such as making automated, intelligent control decisions at the field-based device level.
As an in-memory database system, eXtremeDB boosts performance by eliminating disk I/O, caching, data transfer and duplication, and other unneeded overhead that is hard-wired into traditional disk-based databases. As a result, eXtremeDB significantly outperforms traditional databases, while still offering key data management features including concurrent access, transactions and flexible indexing.
Time-to-market was another important benefit Motorola gained from its decision to integrate eXtremeDB. Previous MOSCAD NFM versions used proprietary data management within the remote terminal units. eXtremeDB simplified integration and provided a standard interface, while use of a software component proven in a wide variety of real-time embedded systems minimized testing and debugging cycles.
