Certeon Selects McObject’s eXtremeDB Embedded Database for S-Series Acceleration Appliance

March 15, 2006 — Certeon has integrated McObject’s eXtremeDB™ in-memory embedded database in its new S-Series application acceleration appliance, a device designed to break through Wide Area Network performance and security barriers and enable broad deployment of mission-critical Web applications to benefit branch office workers.

Founded in 2003 and backed by Tier 1 venture capital firms, Certeon enables organizations with geographically distributed offices to deploy their application servers centrally without sacrificing performance or data integrity. The S-Series appliance accelerates traffic at multiple layers of the OSI stack and leverages a fundamental understanding of application traffic semantics, messaging and data structures to achieve breakthrough performance levels. Through the use of application Blueprints, the Certeon S-Series can turbo-charge the acceleration of key applications.

Certeon’s developers found that while some databases couldn’t keep up with their application’s data management performance demands, McObject’s eXtremeDB excelled at the task, due largely to its in-memory design that eliminates costly disk I/O, caching and related overhead. And while an eXtremeDB in-memory database can be created in process-local memory for multi-threaded applications, it can also be deployed in shared memory for concurrent access by multiple processes—a necessity for Certeon’s device.

eXtremeDB provides proven and robust management of configuration and statistics data for our application. Its shared memory implementation supports the real-time inter-process communication that is essential for achieving the throughput demanded by networking infrastructure,” said John Barger, VP of Engineering for Certeon.

eXtremeDB’s tiny “footprint” was also a factor in its selection for Certeon’s Web acceleration device, John Barger said. With a code size as small as 50K and minimal CPU demands, eXtremeDB reduces memory and processor requirements in its customers’ devices, leading to lower manufacturing costs that deliver a competitive advantage.

“Developing software for network devices entails two significant technical hurdles: keeping embedded code size small while supporting complex features, and eliminating latency in responsiveness,” McObject CEO Steve Graves said. “When designing eXtremeDB, McObject took direct aim at these challenges. Our resulting data management solution is optimized for network infrastructure and similar intelligent devices, so we are quite pleased when an innovator such as Certeon chooses eXtremeDB.”
