McObject’s eXtremeDB High Availability Embedded Database Gains Role In Boeing AH-64D Apache Longbow Helicopter

January 19, 2004 — The Boeing Company, maker of the world-leading AH-64D Apache Longbow multi-role combat helicopter, has selected the XML-enabled, High Availability version of McObject’s eXtremeDB(tm) in-memory database as part of research and development on the vehicle’s critical real-time on-board systems.

Within the Apache Longbow, McObject’s eXtremeDB will manage secure, digitized battlefield data. eXtremeDB’s XML interface will facilitate communications, both internally and between the attack helicopter and external (ground and air) systems. Embedded software including eXtremeDB will run on airborne PowerPC processors and a commercial real-time operating system (RTOS). The program is being developed by The Boeing Company’s Phantom Works organization in Mesa, Ariz.

eXtremeDB’s High Availability (HA) version will provide the highest degree of reliability for the Apache’s mission-critical systems, said Mike Winston, Embedded Software Engineer. Using a rugged, time-cognizant, two-phase commit protocol, eXtremeDB HA ensures that changes to a master database and identical standby databases succeed or fail together, and enables deployment of multiple fully synchronized eXtremeDB databases within the same hardware device or across multiple, widely distributed systems. eXtremeDB’s two-phase commit protocol facilitates instantaneous fail-over, with zero replication-induced latency.

The database’s streamlined design and in-memory deployment delivered the near-zero-latency responsiveness required for advanced systems like a combat helicopter. “In addition, eXtremeDB provides a highly predictable response, which aids in effective planned data management. Use of an existing database helped cut 18 programmer months from the development cycle, said Winston, who noted that Boeing had initially considered numerous options, including developing the embedded data management code for the Apache Longbow from scratch. Use of eXtremeDB’s cross-platform strengths — including available source code from McObject — allows users to easily build it for their selected RTOS.
