MedAptus Selects Perst Database for Mobile Healthcare App on BlackBerry Smartphones

February 1, 2010 — McObject® announced that MedAptus, market leader for healthcare charge capture technologies, has integrated McObject’s Perst™ Lite open source, object-oriented embedded database system for Java ME as a key component in its Professional Intelligent Charge Capture client software for BlackBerry® smartphones.

Perst Lite’s easy-to-use features “contributed significant efficiency” to database integration tasks, saving upwards of two engineering months, MedAptus Vice President of Engineering James Scott estimated.

Within the MedAptus system, Perst Lite manages charges, patient demographics and other data captured on BlackBerry smartphones. The solution enhances doctors’ mobile productivity and delivers other benefits such as streamlined workflows, improved coding compliance and radically increased revenue.

MedAptus chose McObject’s technology after reviewing embedded database management systems (DBMSs) available on BlackBerry smartphones. According to Scott, “Perst Lite offered the right combination of high performance, reasonable cost, a proven track record in mobile devices and availability of support.” He added that among databases available for the Java ME development and operating environment, Perst Lite stood out with a particularly rich feature-set, including an intuitive application programming interface (API), support for multiple index types and the ability to perform ad hoc queries.

The MedAptus solution for BlackBerry smartphones that is based on Perst Lite is currently being deployed at customer locations, including hospitals, clinics and doctors’ offices. In addition to managing patient charges and demographics, the MedAptus client software uses Perst Lite to handle scheduling and application configuration data, and synchronizes bi-directionally with a central Microsoft® SQL Server data store.

“Healthcare is ripe for efficiency gains through precise, reliable data management. The MedAptus Professional Intelligent Charge Capture offering clearly illustrates the importance of a mobile solution in supporting clinician workflow at the point of delivery to encourage streamlined processes. We’re pleased that McObject’s Perst Lite all-Java embedded database can play an instrumental role in extending MedAptus’s technology to the large proportion of doctors who use a BlackBerry smartphone,” said Chris Mureen, McObject chief operating officer.

The open source Perst Lite, with complete source code, is available for free download.

Perst and Perst Lite are part of McObject’s family of powerful small footprint, high performance embedded database software products. The eXtremeDB™ in-memory embedded database from McObject is used widely in devices including MP3 players, WiMAX base stations, digital TVs, telecom/network communications equipment and military/aerospace technology. Perst is available for Java and .NET, including Java ME and .NET Compact Framework. CA’s Wily Technology credits Perst with delivering a shortened development cycle and a ten-fold performance improvement within its real-time Java application.
