New Partnership Brings McObject’s eXtremeDB In-Memory Database to QNX Neutrino RTOS
August 13, 2002 — As part of a new alliance with QNX Software Systems, McObject has released its eXtremeDB in-memory database system (IMDS) for the QNX® Neutrino® real-time operating system (RTOS). In eXtremeDB, developers have a proven IMDS for QNX Neutrino, and benefit from the exceptional performance, reliability and scalability delivered by this software combination.
With its modular, microkernel architecture, the QNX Neutrino RTOS minimizes overhead and makes possible highly dependable, predictable systems without sacrificing performance. Similarly, eXtremeDB accelerates data management via an innovative optimized design. As an in-memory database, eXtremeDB eliminates disk I/O, caching and other performance overhead associated with disk-based databases, while keeping database code size to an ultra-small 110K or less.
Today’s embedded systems and intelligent devices demand a flexible and reliable software foundation. Replacing self-developed data management code with a proven commercial database such as eXtremeDB adds to the system’s scalability. Adding new capabilities becomes easier, because data management is no longer “hardwired” to application code. eXtremeDB also delivers features such as transactions that safeguard data integrity.
In addition to providing rock-solid reliability, QNX Neutrino allows users to upgrade applications, drivers, and protocol stacks on the fly, without having to remove the system from service. To create new applications for QNX Neutrino, developers can use the QNX Momentics development suite, a new, tightly integrated toolset that includes everything from wizards for jumpstarting an embedded project to analysis tools for fine-tuning system performance.
QNX Neutrino and eXtremeDB both maximize organizations’ options in designing and building embedded systems. Both support a broad range of hardware, so users can choose the processor with the right price and performance. QNX Neutrino’s POSIX compliance enhances code portability and leverages users’ Linux and UNIX experience. By offering eXtremeDB source code, McObject provides an invaluable tool for understanding the database and for gaining control over the development environment.
“QNX RTOS technology is a mainstay in key McObject markets, including network infrastructure, telecommunications, and equipment control. We look forward to working with QNX Software Systems to cut our joint customers’ development cycles and enhance their end products,” McObject President and CEO Steve Graves said.
“In-memory databases approach data management for embedded systems in a way that offers many advantages. McObject’s eXtremeDB complements the performance, reliability and footprint advantages inherent in the QNX Neutrino RTOS, and we are pleased to add the company as a partner,” said Linda Campbell, QNX vice president of strategic alliances.
