Real-time Database Management on NAND Flash Storage

From the real-time database management system experts at McObject.

Abstract—In this paper, we delve into deadline management for real-time embedded databases deployed on NAND flash storage. After a brief overview of database deadline management, we examine the core issues inherent to flash media that complicate guaranteeing transaction deadlines. These challenges include wear leveling, garbage collection, and bad block management, typically handled by flash translation layers (FTLs) provided by manufacturers or independent software vendors. We then propose a practical solution for real-time database management that integrates FTL with database transaction managers, enabling effective deadline management while accessing storage devices.

“With a Transactional Flash Translation Layer (TFTL™), databases can run more efficiently, reduce I/O overhead, and, when needed, meet strict real-time constraints, making it a solid choice for both real-time and general-purpose database applications.”
