In-Memory Database System (IMDS) For Powerful, Persistent Memory Caching

What good is offering a Web-based financial, commercial, social network or other high volume application, if users give up on the system while waiting for it to respond? Too often, the information needed is trapped in a back-end DBMS.

The traditional database system has emerged as a serious bottleneck for today’s high volume Web-based services and data center applications.

But many of the solutions proposed to replace the DBMS -- ranging from various object caching approaches to "NoSQL" technologies -- also eliminate attractive DBMS features, such as ACID transactions, formal schema and querying languages, and assured recovery.

To beat this data access bottleneck and keep desired database benefits, organizations integrate the 64-bit eXtremeDB-64 In-Memory Database System (IMDS) as a caching solution. This technique provides the fastest possible data access, with the reliability and durability of a proven database management system (DBMS).

The Problem

Business and social transactions are rapidly moving to the Internet. Data sets supporting Web-based financial, commercial, e-commerce, and social networks are growing fast, but as they scale, quality of experience can vary widely between visits as popular sites buckle under the load of heavy traffic.

Disk-based storage severely cramps data availability. Traditional object caching solutions provide speed by keeping some records in memory, but they lack means for recovery or ensuring data consistency in the event of system failure. Various "NoSQL" database techniques can enhance performance, but have limitations that include no data definition or query language, and relaxed safeguards on data transaction integrity.

The Solution: eXtremeDB-64

The eXtremeDB-64 IMDS solution blends the speed and data availability of caching with the durability, safeguards on data integrity, and sophisticated querying capabilities that are DBMS hallmarks.

Positioning eXtremeDB-64 as the front-end for a traditional database lends high volume systems the benefits of all-in-memory data access. It also ensures continuous operation and data consistency, proven in a wide variety of applications. eXtremeDB-64 features include:
  • Transaction logging
  • High Availability sub-system (replication) with automatic failover
  • Transactions support ACID (Atomic, Consistent, Isolated and Durable) properties
  • 64-bit support for very large databases, proven at 1 terabyte, 15 billion rows  and beyond
  • Pure in-memory design eliminates I/O, cache management, data transfer and other overhead, resulting in the fastest possible responsiveness
  • Optional on-disk persistence (through eXtremeDB Fusion)
  • Progressive error-detection and other sophisticated debugging features
  • High-level database definition language
  • Multiple APIs: native & SQL ODBC
