Real-time embedded databases: For all but the hardest of the hard

This article from Micro Technology Europe examines the question, "is it any longer sensible to build system-specific data handling for real-time embedded systems, or can an off-the-shelf database management system (DBMS) provide the answer?" It examines, feature-by-feature, the requirements for a real-time database, and explores the spectrum of applications' real-time requirements. Author Chris Hills of Phaedrus Systems compares the evolution of embedded DBMSs to that of real-time operating systems (RTOSs), which used to be developed in-house for specific applications but are now almost always purchased as commercial, off-the-shelf (COTS) software.
