McObject Gets Highest Compliment: A Role in Customers’ New Projects

May 4, 2009 — For a developer of embedded systems software, the sincerest form of flattery isn’t imitation. Instead, it’s when a customer that has used your software in one OEM product, chooses it for the next project, thereby endorsing your software’s reliability, ease of use, and other qualities that add up to a high return on investment (ROI) for embedded software.

McObject®, developer of the eXtremeDB™ in-memory and embedded database system for intelligent devices, received this highest compliment in the past few months in embedded systems market segments ranging from biometrics-based access control devices, to IP network appliances and consumer electronics. Customers and their new-generation products that rely on eXtremeDB include the following:

JVC’s Micro-Component Stereo System. The Japanese consumer electronics giant first used eXtremeDB in its Alneo XA HD500 studio-quality digital audio player, where the in-memory embedded database plays a key role in carrying out core functions of instantly sorting, retrieving and playing songs based on users’ stored playlists and real-time commands. Now JVC is releasing new home and portable stereo product lines that incorporate eXtremeDB .

For these new devices, JVC is integrating McObject’s eXtremeDB Fusion, which combines in-memory and on-disk data in a single database system. “In our new products’ embedded software, eXtremeDB delivers benefits already enjoyed in JVC’s portable music player, including real-time performance and minimal RAM and CPU demands. And by adopting eXtremeDB Fusion, we are able to offer the capacity to store a larger number of songs and other digital media,” a JVC engineer said.

L-1 Identity Solutions 4G fingerprint readers. The L-1 Enterprise Access Division is a manufacturer of access control solutions and first used eXtremeDB Fusion in its 3D face reader to store biometric templates and usage logs. eXtremeDB Fusion’s performance, small footprint (less than 100K code size) and reliability proved such a good fit that the L-1 Enterprise Access Division chose to build the database into the company’s biometrics-based fingerprint reader devices. In the new fingerprint reader device, McObject’s embedded database replaces proprietary data management code, and this design change reduced development and quality assurance cycles for the product.

F5 Networks’ BIG-IP security platform. F5 Networks’ BIG-IP device for application delivery networking combines the functions of a dozen or more single-purpose network appliances. eXtremeDB In-Memory Database System manages configuration data in BIG-IP’s underlying TMOS architecture. In 2008, F5 Networks released a new version of its high performance, flexible network and application security solution that for the first time leverages TMOS and eXtremeDB’s configuration management.
