Databases: Make-or-Break Technology Choices for High Performance Applications
Register now for this June 17th Web seminar!
When you need to roll out reliable real-time and embedded applications quickly, the advantages of proven database software are great. But the variety of database technology options is huge, and choices can significantly affect results. In this free Webinar, McObject CEO Steve Graves maps the database terrain for real-time systems terrain, covering topics that include:
• Client/server vs. in-process database architectures
• Impact of storage modality (in-memory or on disk) on form factor, manufacturing cost and performance
• SQL database API vs. efficiency of a navigational interface
• Contribution of database system software to application fault-tolerance

Omicsoft: Perst’s Mono Support Delivered “Effortless” Win-to-Linux Porting
OmicSoft, a provider of powerful software tools for working with genetic and genomic information, has integrated the Perst embedded database system in its Array Server software. By migrating to Perst from a self-developed database solution, Array Server enables scientists to leverage double the amount of project and sample meta-data stored in the product, streamlining their research efforts and broadening potential areas of investigation. Perst support for Mono also shaved six programmer-months when OmicSoft ported the initial Array Server for Windows to a Linux version, company President Jack Liu said. Read more.
Lockheed Martin Adopts Perst Embedded Database for Defense R & D
Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT), one of the largest global defense and security technology companies, will use McObject’s all-Java Perst embedded database management system (DBMS) in a research and development application for the Medium Extended Air Defense Systems (MEADS) project of the United States and NATO partners. Lockheed Martin chose the open source, object-oriented Perst database after a make-or-buy analysis found economic and time-to-market benefits in licensing a commercial, off-the-shelf (COTS) high performance DBMS rather than creating the technology in-house. In The News
Data Indexes Boost Embedded Software’s Performance and Efficiency, Military Embedded Systems, April, 2010. Use of a data index can improve an embedded application’s lookup speed an order of magnitude over linear search. In this article, McObject’s Steve Graves and Konstantin Knizhnik illustrate the use of R-Tree indexes for spatial indexing and the Patricia trie for applications such as call routing and IP filtering.
Embedded Database Vendor McObject Touts Update. eWeek, May 11, 2010. Leading IT industry trade journal reports on the improvements in the new eXtremeDB version 4.1, including support for custom collations, improved organization of persistent data, and security improvements.
Embedded Database Improves Security, Speeds Storage Retrieval. LinuxDevices.com, May 12, 2010. This news portal for the embedded Linux industry provided feature-by-feature coverage of McObject’s eXtremeDB 4.1 release.
Multi-Core Software: To Gain Speed, Eliminate Resource Contention. RTC, May, 2010. Even when applications are parallelized over multiple cores, performance can suffer from resource contention. Parallelizing the access to resources can eliminate much of the bottleneck. This article looks two examples of parallelizing access: multi-version concurrency control (MVCC) for databases, and use of a custom thread-local memory allocator. Both are used in eXtremeDB (MVCC has been available as an option starting in v. 4.0).
Does Dr. Who Use An Embedded Database? EPN, June, 2010. This article looks at defense contractor BAE Systems’ decision to embed eXtremeDB in avionics for the Panavia Tornado GR4 combat jet, and at the advantages. It includes a discussion and code examples of eXtremeDB’s type-safe API, which prevents data typing errors from slipping into application code, thus eliminating a common source of software bugs.
