In the News

Navigating the Technological Minefield, ATCA Newsletter, August – September 2008. In this popular telecom and networking industry news source, Editor-In-Chief Lance Leventhal profiles McObject and the benefits of using embedded databases in real-time communications systems. "If your application has a lot of data to store, such as subscriber information, routing tables, security keys, historical readings, or video clips, you may need an embedded database,” he writes. Products like eXtremeDB differ from enterprise databases in that they’re often implemented as libraries, eliminating client/server communication overhead; offer a faster native interface; deliver greater predictability; are easier to use and maintain (“no DBA required”); and are more scalable than self-developed solutions, he writes.

Using a High Performance Embedded Newsletter, ATCA Newsletter, August – September 2008. This article by McObject Co-Founder and CEO Steve Graves reviews key concepts by which to evaluate an embedded database system for telecom and networking applications. The topics include API, in-memory vs. disk-based storage, and database architectures.

L1 Teams Up With McObject and TI to Make Face Reader More Convenient, Third Factor, September, 2008. This news source on biometric identification and authentication technologies reported on the role of McObject’s eXtremeDB Fusion embedded database in L1 Identify Solutions’ face reader access control solution.

Customer News

Biometrics-Based Face Reader Leverages eXtremeDB Fusion & TI’s DaVinci Technology

With McObject’s eXtremeDB Fusion embedded database system running on embedded Linux, and media processors based on DaVinci™ technology from Texas Instruments (TI), the enterprise access control division of L-1 Identity Solutions has revolutionized the architecture of its 3D face reader product, moving the processing “smarts” from a connected server to the device itself in order to deliver a new level of speed and convenience for users.

Facial recognition technology is inherently data intensive. Using McObject’s proven database to manage facial “templates” reduced development and QA cycles, while eXtremeDB Fusion features such as support for transactions and automatic recovery safeguard data integrity while ensuring stable, continuous operation. eXtremeDB Fusion was also chosen for its exceptional performance and for its small footprint (approximately 100K code size). Perst Lite Brings Embedded Database Superpowers to Carbon Hero

UK- and Netherlands-base startup Carbon Hero uses McObject’s Perst Lite open source, object-oriented embedded database system in a Java ME application that rides along in the user’s BlackBerry or Nokia smartphone, leverages the built-in GPS to gather data on his or her travels, and presents the user’s personal carbon footprint in order to increase environmental awareness.

Perst Lite’s object-orientation and its support for R-Tree indexes provide the efficiency needed to handle GIS data within the devices’ limited memory and storage constraints, Carbon Hero CTO Nick Burch said.

He also praised Perst Lite’s open source, dual licensing distribution. “We were able to get the source code straight away, and start playing. If we wondered how something worked, we could look at the source code, if desired. And McObject’s technical support has been excellent,” Burch said. Read the press release.
