In The News

Face-Storing Database Software, Embedded Computing Design, February 2009. Learn how technology from McObject and Texas Instruments enabled L-1 Identity Solutions’ Bioscrypt Division to create a small, high performance face reader to secure banks, casinos and other high-traffic workplaces. McObject’s eXtremeDB  Fusion stores up to 60,000 facial templates and can verify a person’s identity in less than a second.

Simple as A, B, Tree? Applications Find Mobile Fruit in the R-Tree, GeoWorld, February, 2009. This geospatial journal article details how Carbon Hero used R-Trees (and the Perst Lite embedded database) to gain maximum efficiency in a smartphone-based personal carbon calculator. Carbon Hero’s CTO praises Perst Lite’s open-source, dual-licensing distribution: "We were able to get the source code straight away and start playing," he says.

In-Memory vs. On-Disk Database Systems, CIOL Developer Channel, February 13, 2009. The fact that retrieval from memory trumps disk access for performance adds nothing new to database knowledge. Traditional databases have long offered caching to increase responsiveness. What do in-memory databases (IMDSs) offer that’s new? This article, published in India, examines the benefits of IMDSs’ streamlined design, including elimination of high-overhead processes related to caching.

McObject Grants Persistence to All Objects, SD Times, January 29, 2009.
The author details enhancements in the new Perst 4.0 open source, object-oriented embedded database, particularly Perst’s new ability to add persistence to “foreign” objects (i.e. objects not derived from Perst’s Persistent class).

First Database System Benchmark on Smartphone

A DBMS benchmark on rack-mounted hardware? Old news. The same test on an off-the-shelf mobile device based on Google’s Android platform? That’s new! McObject has deployed its TestIndex benchmark on a T-Mobile G1 Android smartphone, pitting McObject’s Perst open source, object-oriented embedded database against Android’s bundled SQLite. On three of the four TestIndex metrics, Perst performed tasks significantly faster—more than 16 times faster, in the case of database inserts. For details, click here.
