eXtremeDB Embedded Database System Shown Compatible with AdaCore’s GNAT Pro Toolset for Ada Programming Language

December 8, 2014 — McObject® announced that its eXtremeDB® In-Memory Database System (IMDS) has been tested and proven compatible with AdaCore’s GNAT Pro Ada development environment. This combination brings the speed and reliability of McObject’s embedded database system product family to Ada developers using AdaCore’s toolset.

The Ada language and AdaCore’s tools are heavily used in real-time and embedded systems that demand maximum safety, security and reliability, delivered through features including highly analyzable code (making performance more predictable) and the ability to restrict run-time features that will be used. GNAT Pro has been adopted widely in technology market segments ranging from commercial and defense avionics to transportation systems and medical systems.

GNAT Pro supports mixed language development, allowing programmers to easily interface between Ada and other languages such as C, C++, Java, or Python. The eXtremeDB database system has C/C++ roots: it is written in C and typically accessed in real-time embedded systems via its C/C++ function library. Using GNAT Pro’s mixed-language capabilities, developers have successfully integrated eXtremeDB into Ada applications, gaining the benefits of eXtremeDB features including fast data storage, retrieval and sorting; multi-user concurrent access; and transactions that support the ACID (Atomic, Consistent, Isolated and Durable) properties.

Like GNAT Pro, eXtremeDB is used widely in applications requiring low latency and maximum up-time and predictability, including civilian and defense avionics, transportation systems, industrial automation and communications equipment. The eXtremeDB product family includes a High Availability edition offering proven fault-tolerance. eXtremeDB’s native, navigational C/C++ application programming interface (API) offers more predictably fast performance than the SQL database programming language common in enterprise and business-oriented database systems. eXtremeDB platform support extends to the VxWorks 653 and VxWorks CERT real-time operating systems (RTOSs) designed for avionics development.

“Real-time embedded systems, including fault-tolerant and mission critical systems, manage growing volumes of complex data. With eXtremeDB, developers in Ada have a low-latency database management system that complements the AdaCore GNAT Pro toolset’s benefits in the area of application reliability and predictability,” said Steve Graves, McObject co-founder and CEO.

“It is pleasing to see interest in the Ada programming language growing in more and more industries outside its traditional application domains,” said Jamie Ayre, Marketing Director at AdaCore. “Tight integration with tools like eXtremeDB from our partner McObject grows the Ada ecosystem and makes it more attractive to potential users."

About AdaCore

Founded in 1994, AdaCore is the leading provider of commercial software solutions for Ada, a state-of-the-art programming language designed for large, long-lived applications where safety, security, and reliability are critical. AdaCore's flagship product is the open source GNAT Pro development environment, which comes with expert on-line support and is available on more platforms than any other Ada technology. AdaCore has an extensive world-wide customer base; see for further information.

Ada and GNAT Pro see a growing usage in high-integrity and safety-certified applications, including space-based systems, commercial aircraft avionics, military systems, air traffic management/control, railroad systems, and medical devices, and in security-sensitive domains, such as financial services. The SPARK Pro toolset, available from AdaCore, is especially useful in such contexts.

AdaCore has North American headquarters in New York and European headquarters in Paris. Visit the company's Web site at
