McObject’s High Availability Database Simplifies Development On MontaVista Linux Carrier Grade Edition

November 15, 2004 — McObject®, developer of the eXtremeDB in-memory embedded database, and MontaVista Software Inc. announced the release of eXtremeDB™ High Availability (HA) certified for MontaVista® Linux® Carrier Grade Edition (CGE), creating a pairing that streamlines development of fault-tolerant Linux-based telecom and networking equipment.

MontaVista Linux CGE is Linux enhanced with open source real-time, high availability and high reliability features, delivering the premier Carrier Grade Linux platform for deploying communication network equipment in the most demanding carrier-class settings. McObject’s eXtremeDB High Availability embedded database fits these environments well, with a proven track record of reliability in networking and telecom gear, a tiny footprint and blazing in-memory performance.

Alone among embedded databases, eXtremeDB’s High Availability Application Framework—which is integrated with the eXtremeDB database—provides ready-to-go communications infrastructure between “master” and “replica” databases for HA projects, cutting development time and project risk in one of the most complicated areas of HA database integration.

The eXtremeDB High Availability Application Framework provides complete source code, along with a working HA application prototype that implements communications channels built over TCP/IP, UDP/IP and Named Pipes, and can be the basis for user configurable transport/media combinations, in a high availability database sub-system. Developers can use the prototype to see eXtremeDB-HA in action in just a few minutes after installation.

“Creating the entire infrastructure—the plumbing—to ensure real-time updates and rapid failover between database instances in a high availability environment can be daunting, even for experienced database programmers. By simplifying this work, McObject’s eXtremeDB-HA and High Availability Application Framework cut development time and cost, and enable the highest degree of database reliability for equipment built on MontaVista Linux GCE,” McObject President Steve Graves said.

“McObject’s value proposition for high availability deployments—high availability enhancements, shortened development time, lower cost and reduced risk—meshes well with the benefits offered by MontaVista Linux CGE. We are enthusiastic about this new partnership and about working with McObject to bring this combined solution to market,” said Bob Monkman, senior product manager, MontaVista Software.

About eXtremeDB High Availability

eXtremeDB High Availability (HA) is McObject’s in-memory embedded database designed to provide the highest degree of reliability for mission-critical systems such as communications equipment.

Using a rugged, time-cognizant, two-phase commit protocol, eXtremeDB-HA ensures that changes to a master database and identical standby databases succeed or fail together, and enables deployment of multiple fully synchronized eXtremeDB databases within the same hardware device or across multiple, widely distributed systems. eXtremeDB’s two-phase commit protocol facilitates instantaneous fail-over, with zero replication-induced latency.

A discussion of high-availability data management principles can be found in the Embedded Systems Europe article, “Embedded Database Design for HA”, written by McObject Principal Architect Andrei Gorine and available for download at www.mcobject.com/esesept.shtml.
